Eyup Sultan Mosque
Eyup Sultan Mosque, Eyup Sultan Camii, Eyup Sultan Mosque
Turkey, Istanbul
The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is located on the European side of Istanbul, in the Eyup area, and was built under Sultan Mehmed II in 1459. After the conquest of Constantinople, it was the first mosque built by the Ottoman Turks. Eyup Sultan was built on the burial site of the standard-bearer of the Prophet Muhammad Eyup al-Ansari, who died during the siege of Constantinople. Initially, only a tomb was erected over his grave. Now this mausoleum is part of the buildings that are part of the Eyup Sultan Mosque complex, including the mosque itself, a cemetery, madrasahs and baths. This ensemble was also the site of the coronation of the Ottoman sultans.
Currently, this is one of the most revered Muslim shrines not only in Turkey, but also in the rest of the Islamic world - many visitors and pilgrims come here from all over the world.
