The Suleymaniye Mosque is the second largest and the first largest mosque in Istanbul (the first largest is the Sultan Ahmet Mosque), which can accommodate more than 5,000 believers. The mosque is located in the old part of the city, in the Vefa district.
The mosque was built by the order of Sultan Suleiman the Legislator by the architect Sinan in 1550-1557. The dome has a height of 53 m and a diameter of 26.5 m. The floor of the mosque is lined with carpets, inside the mosque is well lit - the light falls from 136 windows. The mosque has four minarets. With the buildings of baths, madrasas (educational institutions), kitchens, libraries and an observatory, the mosque forms a complex comparable in size to a city block.
There is a cemetery in the courtyard of the mosque, here Suleiman himself and his beloved wife Roksolana rest in two adjacent mausoleums. There are versions that the mosque is slowly slipping into the Golden Horn Bay.
