Fatih Mosque
Fatih Mosque and Complex, Fatih Camii ve Kulliyesi, Mosque of the Conqueror, Conqueror's Mosque, Mausoleum of Mehmed II
Turkey, Istanbul
The Fatih Mosque is located in the European part of Istanbul in the Fatih district. Built in 1470 on the site of the destroyed Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles on the orders of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror. This outstanding sultan is buried here in the mausoleum - hence its second name "The Mosque of the Conqueror" comes from.
The mosque is striking in its size and was designed as a huge complex to serve religious and social needs. It was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1766, but restored in 1771. In the courtyard of the mosque there is a cemetery and a richly decorated tomb of Mehmed II and his wife. This tomb is one of the city's most important shrines. The mosque also has a library and a madrasah.
