Atik Valide Mosque is one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in Istanbul, built by the famous Sinan and is his last significant creation. The building was built in 1583 for Valide-Sultan Nurbanu, wife of Selim II and mother of Murat III. The mosque is located on the highest hill in Uskudar region. This is not just a Muslim temple, but a whole complex that includes a madrasah, a dervish abode, a bathhouse, an elementary school, a caravanserai and a hospital. Iznik tiles and marble were used in the interior decoration of the Nurbanu Mosque, and in the courtyard there is a fountain for ablutions.
