Anatolian fortress, Anadoluhisary, Anadoluhisarı, Anadolu Hisarı
Turkey, Istanbul
A small fortress located in the Asian part of Istanbul on the banks of the Bosphorus. It is the oldest Turkish architectural structure in Istanbul. To the north of the fortress is the bridge of Sultan Mehmed Fatih.
Anadoluhisary was built on the Asian shore of the Bosporus by order of Sultan Bayezid I in 1393 and was intended to prepare for the siege of Constantinople. The fortress was located in the narrowest part of the strait, the width of which in this part is 660 meters. Later, in 1452, a new Rumelihisar fortress was built opposite Anadoluhisary, after which the Bosphorus became completely controlled by the Ottoman Empire.
Anatolian fortress was erected as an observation point, its height is 25 meters. Later, the fortress was fortified by Sultan Mehmed II. After the fall of Constantinople, the fortress was used as a prison.
In 1991-1993, the fortress was restored and turned into a museum, closed to the general public.
