Galata Tower

Galata Tower, Galata Kulesi, Galata Tower, Jesus Tower
Turkey, Istanbul
The Galata Tower is located in the European part of Istanbul on a high hill in the Galata district. It can be seen from almost all points of the central part of the city. The tower is 61 meters high, 9 meters in diameter, and 140 meters above sea level. The tower is one of the symbols of the city.
It was built in 1348-1349 by the Genoese, who captured the Byzantine regions, as a defensive fortification and had the name "Jesus Tower". Navigators used the tower as a landmark, as well as a kind of station for trade relations with Byzantium. This tower was built to protect this area. For this reason, in 1341, the construction of the fortress walls of Galata began. In this part of the fortress walls, where their inward bend began, the Galata Tower was built. In front of it are the ruins of defensive walls and ditches that have survived to our time.
The tower got its real name during the Ottoman Empire. After Sultan Fatih Mehmed captured the tower from the Genoese, he reduced its size by 6.8 meters by removing the dome (1510). During the reign of Sultan Murad III (1574–1595), the tower was used as an observatory. Inside the tower, stretching up to the platform, a flight of stairs is built.
In 1791, the tower was reconstructed, its height is 45 m, there is no observation deck.
The reconstruction of 1832 affected the upper part of the tower: an observation deck appeared.
In 1875, the tower acquired a close-to-modern look. In 1964-1967 the tower was restored, the conical dome was rebuilt.
In recent years, the staircase has been restored, an elevator has been built in. Currently, a restaurant, a nightclub and an observation deck are located at the top of the tower. It is a museum object.

Of course, being in "Galatasaray" (this is the name of this area), we could not help but visit the famous Galata Tower. After standing in a long line, we took the elevator to the observation deck of the tower. The view is, of course, awesome. One thing is bad - it's full of people, everyone is pushing, the observation deck is narrow, it's impossible to stop and examine the area normally. In addition to the observation deck, the tower has a restaurant with astronomical prices, decoration and service "a la" restaurant "Dubki" on Syrtsa in Kyiv, no less expensive cafe and quite a decent toilet.
