Dolmabahce Palace

Dolmabahce Palace
Turkey, Istanbul
The Palace of the Ottoman Sultans on the European side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul on the border of the Besiktas and Kabatash regions.
Built in 1842-53. for Abdulmecid I, who became weary of the medieval Topkapi palace complex and wanted to have a baroque palace that could compete in sophistication with European residences of the 18th century. The architects were Armenians from the Balian family. The decoration of the Crystal Stairs and other interiors took 14 tons of gold, and the total cost of construction exceeded five million gold pounds. Among the main attractions are a Bohemian glass chandelier donated by Queen Victoria, weighing almost five tons, and a collection of paintings by Aivazovsky, which the artist executed by order of the Sultan.
For several decades, the palace complex, initially modest in size, has grown to the point that it occupied 45 thousand square meters. meters. In 1889, Abdul-Hamid II moved his residence to the newly built Yildiz Palace, but his successors returned to Dolmabahce. After the fall of the monarchy, Ataturk settled in the palace; here he died on November 10, 1938. The empty palace remained a museum until September 2007, when the Turkish parliament returned it to a political function, making Dolmabahce the official residence of the prime minister.

When the sultans got tired of the Topkapi Palace, they decided to build a new, cool “with European-style renovation”. It turned out expensive and tasteless. Therefore, we did not go inside, but sent friends. Great coffee shop at the entrance : -) The palace looks very cool from the side of the Bosphorus.
