Guvercin Island Castle
Pirate castle, Fortress of island Guvercin
Turkey, Kusadasi
The castle is located on the Pigeon Island Guvercin. It was built in Byzantine times and protected the inhabitants of the city from enemies, most often from attacks by pirates. The castle is surrounded by towers with loopholes, from where the guards were watching. In the 16th century, the castle became a refuge for the famous pirate Khair ad-Din, who was called Barbarossa. For this reason, it was often referred to as the "Pirate Castle".
Now the central part of the castle has been turned into a museum after restoration. There is a cafe, a restaurant and a disco. In the evenings, the castle is illuminated.
