Kursunlu monastery
Kursunlu ManastIrI, Kursunlu Monastery
Turkey, Kusadasi
Kursunlu Monastery is located in the vicinity of the city of Davutlar, about 20 kilometers south of Kusadasi. From a height of 600 meters above sea level, a view of Kusadasi, Guzelcamli and the island of Samos opens up.
Where the name of the monastery came from is not exactly known. It is believed that before it was a Byzantine Orthodox church, built in the II century. From prying eyes, the monastery was hidden behind trees and bushes, becoming an ideal refuge for the first Christians, persecuted by iconoclasts and unbelievers. Reliable protection was also provided by the large distance between the monastery and the nearest village. Over time, Kursunlu Monastery became known as a religious school. Within the walls of the monastery there was a dining room, a kitchen, a cellar, and monks' cells. On its territory there is also a small chapel and a cemetery. The ceiling of the chapel is decorated with frescoes. During the period of iconoclasm, they were symbolic and geometric patterns, and in the second half of the 9th century, gospel scenes began to be depicted on frescoes.
