Mount Chimera

Burning Mount Yanartas, Yanartaş, Mount Chimaera
Turkey, Kemer
Mount Chimera or Yanartash is a mountain on the slope of which natural fire burns 365 days a year. In a small area, natural gas constantly comes out of its slope. This is ordinary methane, with an admixture of a substance that ignites in air. Several dozens of such torches are constantly burning there. This place has been known since ancient times and the gas has been burning for at least the last few thousand years.
Torches sometimes change their intensity and the place of burning sometimes fades, some light up again.
A small stream flows along the slope, which sometimes extinguishes some torches. A path paved with stone goes down the slope to the place of burning of torches. The entrance to the mountain is paid.
According to legend, the Greek hero Bellerophon, the son of the Corinthian king Glaucus, marries the daughter of the Lycian king Iobates and frees the inhabitants of Lycia from the fire-breathing monster Chimera. This Chimera he defeated and buried just in this place on the slope and that is why the fires appear coming out of the ground.

This is very high. I do not advise people with health problems to take this tour (problems with legs, heart, overweight). It’s hard to climb, and even harder to go down, because the steps are destroyed and slippery in places (shoes need sneakers or krasovki). Impressions, well, fire and fire.

Tired of lying on the beach? Forward, to the mountains, to Mount Chimera! A difficult climb up the stairs carved into the rocks will reward you - you will see a miracle! The fire is knocked out right from the stone plateau! The ancients could not explain this, and many beautiful legends are associated with this place. But everything is simple - methane, escaping to the surface, ignites from static electricity : ) Interesting?

I am glad that I was able to visit such an iconic place, but it was not that special. Interesting and curious, but nothing special.
