Erzurum fortress
Castle of Erzurum, Erzurum Kalesi
Turkey, Erzurum
Erzurum Fortress (with a walkway along the top of the wall) stands as an imposing sentinel on a hill in the center of the Old City. Originally built by Emperor Theodosius, it was rebuilt by Suleiman the Great in 1555 and rebuilt several more times at different times. On the inside of the fortress walls there is a small mosque of the 12th century with a conical roof and three separate minarets. In the 19th century, a neo-baroque gallery was added to the minaret with a clock tower donated by Queen Victoria. Later, the minaret became known as Saat Kulesi (clock tower), and you can climb it if you wish.
