Ruins of the ancient ancient city of Aspendos
Aspendos, Aspendus, Aspendos Ruins and Theater
Turkey, Antalya
The ruins of the ancient city of Aspendos are located 35 km from Antalya, near the village of Serik. The city was founded by the Greeks, but reached its peak during the Roman period. After the arrival of the Seljuks, it fell into decay, and soon ceased to exist altogether. After excavations and reconstruction, Aspendos became open to the public. The following buildings and ruins can now be seen: the Acropolis, the foundations of the Basilica, the marketplace Agora, the Bouleuterium, the sanctuary of the Nymphaeum and the fountain, the remains of a Roman aqueduct, part of the eastern gate and the beautifully preserved Aspendos Theater. The theater, in addition to its beauty, also impresses with incredible acoustics.
Every year the ancient city gathers a huge number of admirers of theater and musical culture. The Fires of Anatolia festival is regularly held here.
