Catacombs of the Good Shepherd
Sousse Catacombs, Catacombs of the Good Shepherd
Tunis, Sousse
Not far from the city center, the ancient catacombs of the Good Shepherd, discovered in 1888, are open to visitors.
Their underpasses, over five kilometers long, consist of 250 intersecting underground galleries. To date, three of the four main mines have been excavated, all the finds made at the excavation site are exhibited in the museum. More than 15 thousand Christian graves of the II-IV centuries have been preserved here. Niches were cut in the rock, often one above the other, and after the bodies were laid in them, they were closed with marble panels or laid with tiles. Tourists can see only a small part of the catacombs, where the vaults of the underground corridors were reinforced and do not threaten to collapse.
