The Grand Mosque was built in 921. According to legend, only the Mahdi himself and his entourage could pass through its monumental entrance portal. Only fragments of the building have survived to this day. In 1965, the mosque was restored exactly according to the plans of the Fatimid mosque of the tenth century, but at present it is closed to the public.
