El Ghriba Synagogue
El Ghriba Synagogue
Tunis, Djerba
The El Ghriba synagogue is located on the Tunisian island of Djerba, in the village of Riyadh (the former Jewish village of Hara Segira), a few kilometers southwest of the administrative center of Djerba, Houmt Souk. The synagogue houses one of the world's oldest Torah Scrolls. The synagogue is an annual pilgrimage destination for many Tunisian Jews after Passover.
The age of the synagogue is more than 2000 years old, it is the oldest synagogue in Africa and one of the oldest in the world. According to oral tradition, it was built by a kohen who immigrated after the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem. The current building was built in the 19th century and replaced the building of the 16th century.
