Fortress Borj el-Kebir
Borj el-Kebir, Borj el-Kebir
Tunis, Djerba
Borj el-Kebir, which means "Great Fortress" - the most important fortress of Djerba, is located a few hundred meters from Houmt Souk, right by the port. This fort was built by the order of Sultan Abi Fares al Hafsi in the 16th century during the struggle against the Spanish invasion. During the restoration work that began in the fortress in July 1968, it was found that the building was erected on the ruins of an ancient port of the 13th century.
The fort is a rectangular building surrounded by a large moat in which you can see the remains of a Romanesque fortress, as well as medieval cannons and cannonballs. The walls of Borj el-Kebir are 4 meters thick.
