Salt Lake Chott El Jerid
Chott el Jerid Salt Lake, Chott El Djerid Lake
Tunis, Douz
Lake Chott el Jerid is located in the central part of Tunisia and is the largest salt lake in the Sahara. It occupies an area of about 5 thousand square meters. m. and is an almost lifeless flat space in a bluish-pink frame of salt deposits. During the rainy season, its territory is filled with water and a salt lake is formed, while in summer it almost completely dries up. The lake is interesting because here you can see mirages, as well as mirror optical illusions and effects. Branded souvenirs from Lake Chott el-Jerid are "desert roses" - these are formations of salt, sand and clay crystals that look like real roses. Residents of the surrounding area also created many statues and sculptures made of salt and especially large specimens of "desert roses" to attract tourists. When the sun illuminates the valley of the lake, a stunning and even fantastic view of its vast expanses opens up.
