The National Museum is located a short walk from the Royal Palace, across Sanam Luang Square. This is one of the largest and richest museums in Southeast Asia. The museum complex, whose construction began in 1782 - the same year that Bangkok was founded, consists of several old, but still beautiful buildings of striking Thai architectural design.
The most famous of the museum's buildings is the Buddhasavan Chapel, built in 1795 as the private chapel of the prince. Its walls are covered with extraordinary frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha, in the middle on a dais is one of the oldest precious Buddha statues - Buddha Sihing.
The halls of the National Museum represent different eras of the history and culture of Thailand. The museum has over a thousand artifacts, from the Neolithic era to the modern Bangkok period. Among them are household items, tools, ceramics, weapons, transport, theatrical costumes and masks, musical instruments, mother-of-pearl products, and jewelry.
On the territory of the museum there is a currency exchange, a souvenir shop, a postcard shop, a library, a restaurant.
