When Princess Srinakarin, mother of King Rama IX, passed away in 1995, it was one of the saddest moments in Thai history. An outstanding woman was born a commoner, the daughter of a jeweler in the province of Nonthaburi and grew up in Thonburi, near Wat Alongkharam. Throughout her life, she never forgot her humble origins and gave her all to improve the lives of the common Thai people. Her most famous achievement was the founding of the Doi Tung Foundation to help the northern peoples.

In 1993, King Bumipol Adulajay expressed his desire to restore the area around his mother's childhood home in Thonburi as a tribute to Princess Srinakarin, who is still devoted to Mae Fa Luang - "Our Common Mother". Her house was no more, so the owners of several similar buildings in the area were happy to give them to the King for the implementation of the planned project.
In the Memorial Park of the Mother of the Princess, there is a reproduction of the house where she lived as a child, surrounded by beautiful gardens. There are two exhibition halls in Memorial Park, the first is devoted to her life, including signed photographs such as the princess, at the age of 14. Photos with accompanying text tell about the life of the princess before the cremation ceremony in 1996. The second exhibition hall details her activities and achievements in various projects. It includes some very personal items, such as a Mickey Mouse embroidery, lovingly made by the Princess for the King.
