St. Michael's Gate was built in the XIII century as part of the city's fortifications. It was the main portal through which one could enter the city from the north. The other three city gates have not survived to this day. The tower, which housed the checkpoint, was named after the Church of St. Michael, which was located directly in front of the gate. This church was destroyed when Bratislava was besieged by the Turkish sultan's troops. The fireplaces from which it was built were used to erect additional protective structures.→
