The Baroque palace was built in 1753-1756 by architect GB Marinelli. It was intended to house the Hungarian Royal Chamber, and in 1802-1848 it housed the Hungarian Parliament. This is evidenced by a memorial plaque in Slovak and Hungarian. Another plaque was erected in 1929 in honor of Ludovit Stur, a prominent Slovak poet and public figure. In 1847-1848 he worked here as a member of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Hungary from the town of Zvolen.

In 1860-1867 the palace housed the residence of the royal governor. Then the palace was used by the judiciary. After the reconstruction of 1953-1955, it was transferred to the university library according to the project of Alois Darzycek.
