Manezhnaya Square

Manezhnaya Square
russia, Moscow
Manezhnaya Square is located in the center of Moscow near the Kremlin. It got its name from the Manezh building overlooking the square, built in 1817 in honor of the fifth anniversary of the victory over Napoleon. At present, it is the Manege Central Exhibition Hall. Once upon a time, the courtyards of the streltsy army were located on the square, but, after the rebellion, Peter I evicted them from Moscow. In 1932, during the reconstruction for the construction of the highway and the Palace of Soviets, all the buildings on the square, except for the Manezh, were demolished. The outbreak of war prevented the completion of the reconstruction, a large asphalt platform appeared in the center of the capital, on which tank parades began to be held. In 1967, Manezhnaya Square was renamed the 50th Anniversary of October Square. In 1990 the square was returned to its original name, it was expected to undergo radical changes. An underground shopping complex Okhotny Ryad appeared on the square, during the construction of which many items of crafts, trade and everyday life of several historical eras were found, which made up the exposition of the Museum of Archeology of Moscow. A glass dome with a clock showing world time and a sculpture of George the Victorious comes to the surface. Fountains are located on the square, there is a symbolic sign "Kilometer Zero", which is popular with tourists. After all, there is a local sign: if you throw a coin here, you will definitely return to Moscow. The Resurrection Gates with the chapel of the Iberian Mother of God were rebuilt. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a monument to Marshal G.K. Zhukov was erected on the square, at the entrance to the Historical Museum.
