The Cathedral Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow is the cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church not far from the Kremlin on the left bank of the Moskva River, on the site formerly called Chertoly. The existing building is an external reconstruction of the temple of the same name, created in the 19th century, carried out in the 1990s. The names of officers of the Russian army who fell in the war of 1812 and other close military campaigns were inscribed on the walls of the temple.
The original temple was erected in gratitude to God for the salvation of Russia from the Napoleonic invasion. It was designed by the architect Konstantin Ton. The construction lasted almost 44 years: the temple was founded on September 23, 1839, and consecrated on May 26, 1883. On December 5, 1931, the temple building was destroyed. It was rebuilt on the same site in 1994-1997.
The temple is the largest in the Russian Church. Designed for 10,000 people.
