The building of the Kunstkamera was built at the beginning of the 18th century. to house the collection of rarities purchased by Peter the Great during his trip to Holland. The Kunstkamera became the first scientific and natural museum in Russia and to this day is a symbol of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was built in the Petrine Baroque style and consists of two buildings connected by a multi-tiered tower. Now the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography operates here, which keeps a unique collection of antiquities, revealing the history and life of many peoples of the world. In addition to museum exhibits, here you can also see an exposition dedicated to M. Lomonosov, and in the museum tower - the Big Gottorp Globe-Planetarium. Many people know the Kunstkamera for its collection of "freaks" - anatomical rarities and anomalies.
