The General Staff building is one of the architectural gems of St. Petersburg and a decoration of
Palace Square. It was designed by the architect C. Rossi and erected in 1829. The General Staff building consists of three buildings connected by a rather original triumphal arch dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812. At the top of the arch is a sculptural chariot driven by the goddess of victory Nike. The whole building has a solemn, majestic and monumental appearance. Today, the eastern section of the General Staff Building hosts expositions of the
Hermitage dedicated to the art of the 19th–20th centuries. and the work of the Impressionists.
