Peter and Paul Cathedral is the oldest temple in St. Petersburg, because it was founded by order of Peter I in 1703 on the territory of
Peter and Paul Fortress. This functioning Orthodox cathedral, a monument of Peter's baroque, looks more like European churches and does not fit into the canons of Orthodox architecture. The height of the cathedral together with the bell tower is 122 m, it is visible from afar thanks to its sharp spire with the figure of an angel. The Peter and Paul Cathedral is also the tomb of the tsars and emperors of the Romanov dynasty - Peter the Great and his descendants before Tsar Alexander III are buried here. Many of the cultural values of the Peter and Paul Cathedral include its magnificent gilded carved iconostasis of the early 18th century.
