The Mariinsky Theater is one of the largest opera and ballet theaters in Russia.
The theater traces its history back to the Bolshoi Theater founded in 1783 by order of Empress Catherine the Great, which was located in a building later rebuilt as the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He was a member of the Imperial Theaters of Russia. In 1920, the theater changed its name to the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater (GATOB), since 1935 it was named after S. M. Kirov. January 16, 1992 the theater was returned to its historical name.
