One of the most amazing monuments of St. Petersburg are the ancient Egyptian sphinxes, installed in 1834 on the University Embankment near the building of the Academy of Arts. These lions with the faces of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, 3.5 thousand years old, were carved from syenite and used to be at the Egyptian temple in Thebes.
