Palace Square is the main and most significant square of the Northern capital of Russia. It was formed in the 18th century. with the construction of the Winter Palace by the architect Rastrelli - this, in fact, was the reason for the name of the square. C. Rossi made a huge contribution to the magnificent appearance of this architectural ensemble - he designed and built the General Staff Building in such a way that it combined the new and old buildings of the square into a common and majestic composition.
Palace Square is surrounded from different sides by the Headquarters Building of the Guards Corps, the Winter Palace and
General Staff Building with the Triumphal Arch, and in its center rises
Alexander Column. Since the end of the twentieth century. to this day, the square is a venue for various events - sports marathons, parades and concerts.
