The 47-meter Alexander Column is the central element of
Palace Square. It was erected in 1834 according to the project of O. Montferrand and symbolized the victory of the Russian Emperor Alexander I over Napoleon in the war of 1812. This is the highest monument in the world, carved from solid pink granite. Surprising is the fact that the Column is not fixed by anything and is supported only by its own weight. This monument is set on a pedestal, decorated with bas-reliefs glorifying the courage of the Russian army, and crowned with a gilded sculpture of an angel with a cross. The Alexander Column has become one of the unofficial symbols of St. Petersburg.
