The Museum of the History of the Jewish People was opened in 1978 in the building of the former Great Synagogue of the 19th century. in the quarter where the Jewish community of Bucharest historically lived. The exposition of the museum is dedicated to the once significant Jewish diaspora on Romanian soil, its history, features and achievements, as well as the Jewish contribution to the cultural, economic and social life of the country. The Museum's Memorial Hall presents exhibits that tell about the tragic events of the Holocaust - about pogroms, deportation to death camps and massacres of Romanian Jews. Also here are art products, ritual utensils, manuscripts and household items related to Jewish religious symbols. Museum collections cover many aspects of the social life of Romanian Jewry over a fairly long historical period.
