The House of the Peoples or the Palace of the Parliament is a monumental and grandiose building built on Spiriy Hill during the dictatorship of N. Ceausescu in 1984–1989. This palace is considered the second largest administrative building in the world. During its construction, entire blocks of Bucharest were demolished, and an unimaginable amount of marble, crystal, wood, bronze and other materials were used. This colossal Palace occupies 12 floors, has 4 underground levels and 1100 rooms and halls and is visible from all over the city. Currently, the Romanian Parliament and Senate sit here, the
National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Totalitarianism and Socialist Realism are located here, and important state and international meetings are held in its solemn halls and salons as well as various exhibitions and concerts. The palace halls and rooms amaze with their luxury and decoration, with their amazing chandeliers, ceilings, sculptures, tapestries, carpets and oak furniture, so it is not surprising that it is a must-see item on the Bucharest sightseeing list.
