Monastery of the Order of Christ

Convento de Cristo, Convento de Cristo, Templar Castle in Tomar
Portugal, Tomar
The monastery of the Order of Christ was founded as an order castle of the Templars in the XII century, but in the XIV century it was turned into a monastery. The architecture of the monastery is characterized by a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles, an abundance of distinctive signs of the Templars in the decor, as well as elements of the Moorish style. The heart of the monastery is the round church of Charola, built in imitation of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and decorated with floral motifs. The inside of the church is decorated with Gothic paintings and sculptures and Manueline stone engravings. The Monastery of the Order of Christ is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The majestic castle-monastery in Tomar is located on a high hill, it is the main dominant of the small town of the same name. Tomar Castle was built in the 12th century as the main residence and headquarters of the Portuguese wing of the powerful Knights Templar. However, after the dissolution of the order in the XIV century. King Dinis I of Portugal reorganized it, creating a new order of Christ, which became the successor to all the property, privileges, charter and wealth of the templars. This new military order was involved in the preparation and implementation of the great sea voyages and discoveries that the Portuguese made in the 15th-16th centuries.
