Pena Palace

Palacio Nacional da Pena, Pena National Palace
Portugal, Sintra
Pena Palace was built at the request of King Ferdinand II and his wife, Queen Mary II, between 1842 and 1854. It was erected on a high rock, where at that time there were the ruins of the medieval monastery of Pena, which gave the name to this palace and park complex. The castle and the park served as a summer royal residence until the revolution in 1910 - from the same year it was nationalized and soon a museum was opened there. This amazing castle is a whimsical mixture of different styles - there are Moorish arches and courtyards, Indian domes, as well as Portuguese and German turrets and elements. The Terrace of the Queen offers a magnificent view of the surroundings of Sintra and the unusual palace itself. The interiors of the Pena Palace are no less interesting than its appearance: these are real royal chambers with beautiful frescoes, murals, many paintings, rich furnishings, sculptures, stained glass windows and much more. The extensive Pena Park, located on the slopes of a hill, deserves special attention.

I got to the palace on my own from Lisbon (there is a review). I immediately bought tickets to several points (Palace of Foam, Castle of the Moors and Montserrat Palace). I got to the castle from the ticket office by bus for 3 euros (although you can do it more economically - on foot)). Pena Castle is impressive from the outside. Inside - more calm, but curious. I advise you to look. *The photo is upside down for some reason. Tried to change - did not work. Sorry))

In 1840 German Prince Ferdinand von Saxe-Coburg-Gotha planned to build a castle with a park in a romantic style on the site of the derelict Pena monastery in Sintra near Lisbon. This idea became the life work of a fan of the arts and technical creativity, known as a watercolor artist. Work continued until the death of Ferdinand in 1885. The project and construction was led by the German architect Baron Eschwege under the influence of the appearance of Bavarian castles, especially the castle of the Bavarian romantic king Ludwig II - Neuschwanstein (New Swan Rock), although without the tragedies associated with the name of the Bavarian king who died young.
