The Sã o Bento railway station is not only an important transport hub for the city of Porto, but also a valuable historical and architectural object. It is located in the city center on the site of the Benedictine monastery of San Bento de Ave Maria, which burned down in 1783. The construction of the station began in 1900, and 16 years later it was officially opened to passengers. The station building was built in the French neoclassical style by the architect José Marcus de Silva, and its interiors are decorated with azulejo tiles based on sketches by the artist Georges Coulas.→
