Porto Cathedral

Sé Catedral do Porto, Porto Cathedral
Portugal, Porto
Porto Cathedral is located on one of the city's hills, close to the Douro River and close to the São Bento Station. It was built in the XII-XIII centuries. in the Romanesque style, and in the following centuries the temple was rebuilt and expanded several times, which brought elements of Gothic and Baroque into its decoration.
The cathedral resembles a fortress with two massive square towers and a large rose window. Inside the monastery, noteworthy are the Chapel of the Evangelist John with the Gothic tomb of the Knight of the Hospitaller Order João Gordo, who was in the service of King Dinis I, and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with a magnificent silver altar. The inner courtyard of the temple is also interesting for inspection - its covered gallery is decorated with an azulejo panel on biblical themes and scenes from Ovid's poem "Metamorphoses". In the chapel of St. Vincent is the Treasury of the Cathedral, which contains old books, medieval statues of saints, precious church utensils and clothes of priests.
In the square in front of the Cathedral, there is a pillory and a platform that offers an excellent panoramic view of the Douro River and rows of houses on both banks.

Porto Cathedral is the main religious building of the city, resembling in its appearance more a fortress than a temple. Its building was built in the XII-XIII centuries, but over the long centuries of its existence it was rebuilt several times. At different times, many significant events took place here: Henry the Navigator, revered by the Portuguese, was baptized in this temple, and in the XIV century. Here the wedding ceremony of King John I and the English princess Philippa of Lancaster took place.
