Traditional village José Franco

Aldeia Tipica de Jose Franco
Portugal, Mafra
Not far from Mafra, in the village of Sobreiro, there is a typical Portuguese village-museum of the early 20th century, sculpted from clay by the potter and sculptor José Franco. He built with his own hands a whole life-size village with shops, houses of architecture typical of these parts, furnished inside, with a water mill, a school, a smithy, a tavern and craft workshops.
There is a playground on the territory of the museum; a hall where the works of the artist José Franco are exhibited; restaurant; own bakery; and a wonderful souvenir shop with a large selection of ceramics. A trip here will undoubtedly arouse interest among tourists of all ages.

Free open-air museum dedicated to ancient Portuguese life. A Portuguese village with traditional white houses on a slightly reduced scale was built by the potter José Franco to give future generations an idea of what the village life looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum begins with a working device for extracting water. There are water and windmills, shops, workshops, a smithy, a school, even with wax figures of people. True, some of this may be closed, but even what is open is enough to get acquainted with the life of that time.

Between Mafra and Ericeira, in a village called Sobreiro, there is a traditional open-air museum village created by the potter and sculptor José Franco. At the age of 25, he decided to build a museum, and since then, in his spare time, he has been building a miniature village on his own, where traditional professions and the life of peasants from the surrounding villages will be presented. Despite the fact that the entire museum occupies a small area, there is such a variety of everything - a shoemaker's workshop, a bakery, a tavern, a church, a school, a water mill and much more.
