The fortress of Sã o Jorge, towering over the capital of Portugal, was founded in the 5th century by the Visigoths, from this hill you can see the whole city. The Moors who captured Iberia rebuilt it into the Alcazar - a Moorish castle. When the Moors were expelled from the peninsula, Afonso took it by storm. Enriques in 1147, he turned the fortress into his residence and gave it its current name. Here Vasco da Gama was solemnly welcomed upon his return from a voyage to India in 1499. Then the fortress was abandoned, for some time there was a prison, it fell into disrepair and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755.→
