The 25-hectare Eduardo VII Park is located north of
Marquis de Pombal Square. The park was created on a hillside at the end of the nineteenth century as Liberty Park, but in 1903, a year after the visit of the King of Great Britain to Lisbon on a friendly visit, it received its modern name. In the highest part of the park there is a monument-fountain in the form of a rock, in memory of the April 25, 1974 revolution. There is also an observation deck with the largest flag of Portugal on the flagpole. The park has three greenhouses with tropical plants, cacti, palm trees and waterfalls. Near the greenhouses there is a lake in which large carps live. In the eastern part of the park you can see the Sports Pavilion named after the Olympic champion Carlos Lopes with walls covered with beautiful azulejos. For the youngest visitors there is a playground.
