The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, one of the largest art museums in Portugal, was opened in October 1969 by the will of the billionaire of Armenian origin, oil tycoon Calouste Gulbenkian and is subsidized by the foundation named after him, which operates in the museum building. The museum's collection includes more than 6 thousand items of European fine art, Western European furniture of the 15th and 16th centuries, arts and crafts of the 18th century, medieval manuscripts, jewelry, antique ceramics; works of Armenian art, ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian monuments. A significant part of the collection of European paintings was bought by G. Gulbenkian in the early 1930s at auctions during the sale of paintings from the Hermitage.
