Vasco da Gama Bridge
Portugal, Lisbon
The Vasco da Gama Bridge, 17.2 km long, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Europe. The six-lane road bridge over the Tagus River was built with private funds and opened on March 29, 1998 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route from Europe to India. The construction of the bridge is designed to withstand tremors of the earth's crust 4.5 times stronger than the devastating earthquake of 1755. The bridge is a decoration of the Tagus River and a popular place for photographing for tourists.
