Basilica da Estrela
Portugal, Lisbon
Basilica da Estrela was built in 1790 by the will of Queen Maria I of Portugal in fulfillment of her vow in honor of the birth of her son, the Prince of Brazil. The basilica in baroque and neogothic architectural style is located on a hill and its dome with a cross is visible from everywhere. Two bell towers with allegorical figures and with statues of saints adjoin the temple. The main attraction of the temple is a nativity scene with a scene of the birth of Christ, consisting of 500 miniature figures carved from terracotta and cork wood. The basilica houses the marble tomb of Queen Mary I. Basilica da Estrela is a historical monument of the Portuguese people.
