Not far from the University of Coimbra is the Old Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Its ancient and powerful walls look like a well-fortified castle, and this external similarity is not accidental, because the cathedral was built in the distant 12th century, when these lands were conquered from the Moors and battles and raids often took place. Inside the cathedral, you should pay attention to the unique gilded carved altar of the 16th century, the interior of the church decorated with azulejos, the miraculously preserved wooden ceilings in the Moorish style and the ancient tombs of important persons with skillfully carved sarcophagi.→
