The Church or Monastery of the Holy Cross is located in the lower part of the city of Coimbra, it is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was founded in the 12th century. and was one of the main religious and educational centers of the young kingdom of Portugal. In the XVI century. the monastery was rebuilt during the reign of King Manuel I, which brought to its appearance features of the Manueline style.

The main faç ade makes the first impression on visitors - it is a magnificent portico of white stone and a large window richly decorated with carvings and sculptures. Inside, all the walls of the temple are covered with a panel of white and blue azulejo tiles, and on one of the walls there is a magnificent organ of the 18th century. Here lie the tombs of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, and his son Sancho I, their sculptural figures are made in knightly armor. The Gothic tombstones of the Portuguese kings are richly decorated and therefore delightfully beautiful.
Entrance to the church and the clock is free, and a visit to the sacristy with a wonderful collection of religious paintings and the inner courtyard of the monastery costs 2.50€.
