Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima

Basílica de Nossa senhora do Rosário, Sanctuary of Fátima, Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima
Portugal, Fatima
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima is a sacred complex in honor of the Mother of God, erected on the site where in 1917 three shepherds from a local village saw the Virgin Mary. Its vast territory consists of the majestic Basilica of the Virgin of the Rosary with a bell tower, the Chapel of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary, a large square for worshipers and the modern Church of the Holy Trinity.
The tall building of the Basilica of the Holy Virgin was designed by the Dutch architect Gerard Van Kriken in neo-baroque style from local limestone. Its construction lasted 25 years. In the center of the temple rises a 65-meter bell tower topped with a bronze crown and a large cross. The belfry of the monastery consists of 62 bells, and in the niche of its main facade there is a statue of the Virgin Mary. The building of the temple is connected with two chapels by an extensive colonnade, which is decorated with marble statues of 17 Portuguese saints. Inside the temple is filled with light and space. Here you can see 14 altars dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary, as well as stained-glass windows and paintings on the theme of the life of the Virgin, the Apparitions of the Virgin and the Fatima message.

The city of Fatima is considered a major religious and pilgrimage center in Portugal and Europe. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come here every year to worship the Most Holy Theotokos. The entire complex of the Sanctuary of Fatima was built in the middle of the twentieth century. and is dedicated to the appearance of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children on May 13.1917. The first thing that catches the eye of a pilgrim or tourist is a colossal square where believers gather during grandiose religious festivities (Candlelight Procession and Farewell Procession).
