Castle in Silvish
Castelo de Silves, Silves Castle
Portugal, Algarve
The red sandstone castle dates back to the Moorish era, although at different times it was a Christian fortress and prison. Here stood the "Palace of Verandas" - since 1053 the residence of the ruler of Seville and Vali. Huge polygonal ramparts offer a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings. Inside the castle are gardens and a vaulted Arab pond - Cisterna da Moura Encantada (Pond of the Enchanted Moorish Girl).
