Sculpture group Transition 1977–2005

Monument to the Victims of Martial Law
Poland, Wroclaw
The sculptural group "Transition 1977–2005" in Wrocław is dedicated to the victims of martial law. It is located at the place where the most active popular demonstrations took place in 1981 - at the intersection of Marshal Pilsudski and Szwidnicka streets. "Transition 1977-2005" consists of two parts: on one side of the transition, seven figures enter the ground, disappearing without a trace, and on the other, seven people come out of the ground to fight against the military regime.

At the crossroads of Marshal Pilsudski and Shvidnitska streets, seven bronze men go underground. And on the other side, they reappear. This is a stunning installation by Jerzy Kalina, which is unofficially called the "Monument to the Victims of Martial Law". And yes, it gives you goosebumps. The first group symbolizes the events of 1981, when about 5.000 people from among the active members of Solidarity were arrested in Poland overnight. Over the next few months, there were already 4.000 of them.
