The "Warsaw Citadel" is a fortress built in the early nineteenth century by order of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, in order to strengthen Russian military positions in Warsaw. The reason for the creation of the citadel was the national liberation uprising that took place in 1830 in Warsaw for the independence and integrity of the Polish lands. Later, after the capitulation of the Russian troops, the fortress passed into the possession of the Polish military as a garrison and training center. During the years of the occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany, German barracks were located in the fortress. Now a museum functions in the building of the Warsaw Citadel.
