Pawiak Prison Museum
Pawiak Prison Museum, Museum Wiezienia Pawiak, Museum Niepodleglosci
Poland, Warsaw
Pawiak Prison was the largest prison for convicted political prisoners during World War II. The prison building was blown up by German troops during the surrender. Since 1965, a museum in memory of the dead Polish prisoners began to operate in the cellars of the former prison. The museum was built on the foundations of Pawiak Prison, using its original ruins and debris. A gloomy atmosphere reigns here to this day, and the stylized cells betray the real conditions in which people were kept. The exposition of the museum contains preserved artifacts, photographs and personal belongings of the convicts.
