Basilica of the Holy Cross
Kościół Świętego Krzyża, Church of the Holy Cross
Poland, Warsaw
One of the best examples of baroque Catholic churches in Warsaw is the Basilica of the Holy Cross. Initially, there was a chapel on the site of the basilica, which over time was transformed into a small wooden church for local parishioners. The Basilica of the Holy Cross received its modern look at the end of the 17th century, thanks to the work of the outstanding architect Josef Shimono Belotto. The church is notable for the fact that in one of its columns there is an urn with the heart of Frederic Chopin. The urn was returned to Warsaw according to the will of the composer, as a sign of his devotion to his historical homeland.
